The Brewster Fire & Rescue Department is committed to providing its members with the most current fire, ems rescue, technical rescue, and emergency operations training available to our profession. Our belief is that effective training programs and mandated certification is the foundation of delivering expert, professional, and efficient services to the residents of our community. To accomplish this mission our department utilizes a diverse committee of department personnel who specialize in the delivery of national, state, and local certified fire and ems training curriculums. These members are tasked to develop, initiate, and supervise the advancement of the job skills and knowledge of our personnel commencing at the probationary firefighter/emt level and continuing throughout their career.
The committee schedules monthly basic and advanced fire training along with a host of other related sessions linked to the type of fire related responses we would be expected to respond to. Some of these training topics include, hazardous material response, technical rescue, vehicle extrication, water & ice rescue, rapid intervention, natural disasters, and firefighter safety & survival techniques. All in-house training is designed to meet NFPA 1001 Standards and Commonwealth of Massachusetts firefighter certification requirements.
The department has established an excellent relationship with the Barnstable County Fire Academy and capitalizes on the regional facility by utilizing their services to conduct annual live burn, firefighter safety, incident management, and hazardous material, and technical rescue training. We also utilize the services of the State Fire Academy in Stow as available.
The training committee also schedules monthly emergency medical training to ensure our personnel remain up-to-date with the latest emergency medical related technology, equipment, and treatment. Both paramedics and emt’s participate in this training and continuing education points which are required for re-certification are awarded to those who attend. These training sessions are instructed by our in-house staff of professionals and other medical experts from across the state.
We are fortunate to have a long standing written agreement with Cape & Islands EMS that provides our department with medical oversight, training programs, quality control, and a medical director. In addition to these tasks they also act as the regional liaison between our department and the state Office of Emergency Medical Services and the areas regional hospitals.
The in-house ems training conducted by our personnel coupled with the outside training provided by our partners ensures we are imparting the highest available level of pre-hospital care to the residents of our community.
