During the week of April 24 to April 28 Deputy Chief Kevin Varley, FF/Paramedic Joseph Cox, and FF/Paramedic Michael Herrmann attended the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis. FDIC is the largest fire service conference in the country with over 35,000 annual attendees from all type of fire and rescue departments. The conference includes over 900 vendors displaying the latest state-of-the-art fire service equipment, apparatus, and technology and over 300 classroom and hands-on training sessions taught by the world’s best fire service instructors. No other event in the world contains the vast amount of fire and ems topics or networking opportunities presented at FDIC. Firefighters attending the conference not only become better firefighters and emergency medical providers but also take the valuable information gained at the conference back to their departments to share with their fellow firefighters. The FDIC “Experience” is hard to convey via mere statistics, percentages and words. Many attendees talk about the “hallway conversations,” “life-long friendships,” and the power of this event to “recharge the passion” for the fire and ems profession they have chosen as their career.
