Brewster Fire Department Responds to Fatal Structure Fire

On Friday December 23 at 5:31 p.m. the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 21 Barons Way. The report originated from a UPS deliveryman working in the area who reported smoke and flames coming from the dwelling.

On arrival fire department units found heavy fire coming from the rear of a 1 ½ story wood frame residential structure extending throughout the entire first floor. Fire Department crews immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire using two 1 ¾ handlines. This attack coupled with the rapid and coordinated ventilation of the dwelling allowed for a quick knockdown of the heavy fire within the home.

After extinguishing the bulk of the fire a secondary search of the home was conducted and a deceased victim was found in the room of origin on the first floor in the rear of the residence. The Harwich, Orleans, and Eastham Fire Departments assisted at the scene of the fire and the Dennis and Yarmouth Fire Department covered Brewster Headquarters during the incident. All Brewster personnel were released from the scene at approximately 11:00 p.m.

The origin and cause of the fire is under joint investigation by the Brewster Fire and Police Departments and by State Police Assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and to the Office of the Cape and Islands District Attorney.

The Brewster Fire Department offers our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased victim.
