On Sunday June 12 at 4:52 p.m. the Brewster Fire Department was requested to respond with multiple fire apparatus to a structure fire located at 41 9th Street (Lieutenants Island) in the Town of Wellfleet. Engine 234 under the direction of Captain Jeff Sturtevant, Heavy Rescue 241, and Car 231 (Chief Moran) responded on the initial request.
Upon the arrival of Wellfleet firefighters the home was found fully involved. Fire suppression operations were hampered by high winds which caused extensive exposure problems, an inadequate water supply caused by the lack of fire hydrants on the island, and limited access and egress to the home. Due to these challenges the incident commander (Wellfleet Fire Chief Pauley) utilized full second alarm and tanker task force assignments which brought mutual aid from much of the Cape to the scene or to cover empty fire stations. A drafting operation using engines and tankers was utilized at the fire scene to provide adequate water for suppression activities. This water had to be shuttled from a hydrant at the Marconi drafting site some distance away. Firefighters were also hampered by the rising tide which made it impossible to cross the bridge to the island for an approximate two hour period during the fire.
One firefighter was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries. Three dogs perished in the blaze which is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office, Wellfleet Fire Department, and Wellfleet Police. All Brewster units were placed back in service at approximately 8:30 p.m.
