On Saturday May 14 fire departments from across Cape Cod including members of the Brewster Fire Department participated in a mass casualty incident (MCI) drill in the Town of Barnstable. The drill was designed to establish a learning environment for local public safety officials to test emergency response plans, policies, and procedures as they pertain to a mass casualty event on a passenger rail train. To ensure an effective exercise, subject matter experts and representatives from numerous agencies participated in the planning process, responded to the emergency and conducted an after-action review.
The exercise scenario included the derailment of a passenger rail train causing significant passenger injuries and entrapment. Approximately 80 volunteers from the community performed the role of passengers on the train. Firefighters conducted both fire and EMS related tasks during the drill including triage, treatment, and transportation of victims, extrication and removal of patients from the train, forcible entry and technical rescue tactics, and fire suppression operations. Brewster Heavy Rescue 241 under the direction of Acting Captain Dan Kimball responded to and operated at the event.
