On Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1 Brewster firefighters Thomas Osborn, Michael Herrmann, Robert Hooper, Bretten Johnson, and Jordan Shaw attended a two-day Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) training program at Truro Fire Headquarters. Rapid Intervention teams are an integral component of ensuring the safety of firefighters at fire suppression operations. In Barnstable County and across the country these teams are exclusively utilized to rescue firefighters who may become trapped, disoriented, or lost while operating inside a building fire.
The physically demanding course which was taught by instructors from the State Department of Fire Services included classroom sessions and discussion on the use of thermal imaging devices, search practices, mayday messages, size-up, and the tools and staffing levels required to compose a team. The program also included a number of skill building stations and hands-on practical evolutions that tested the ability of the participants to work as a team and remove firefighters from dangerous environments.
