On Saturday August 2, 2015 at 8:25 p.m. the Brewster Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 7 Hayward Lane in Orleans. On arrival, Orleans firefighters found a rapidly advancing fire on a second floor deck and exterior siding at the rear of a 3 story wood frame private residence. The Incident Commander called for a working structure fire assignment and the first due engine crew began advancing an 1 ¾ attack line to extinguish the growing fire which had now moved to the interior of the building.
The working structure fire assignment brought an additional engine from Harwich and an Engine and Ambulance from Brewster directly to the scene. Additional mutual aid units provided coverage to the Town of Orleans.
Due to the very narrow streets in the area and severely limited access to house, it was not possible to get a ladder truck into the location, so crews were forced to use ground ladders to access the roof and interior of the building. Due to the rapid and professional work of personnel at the scene all visible fire was quickly knocked down with two attack lines. Firefighters then conducted extensive overhaul of the fire area to check for hidden fire and prevent extension to other locations in the building.
The fire’s cause and origin remains under investigation. All Brewster units were placed back in service at 10:39 p.m.
