On Thursday April 23, 2015 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded the Brewster Fire Department a $55,000 Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Grant that will be utilized to purchase 22 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) for selected members of the department who are currently wearing non-compliant firefighting gear.
While conducting research to determine the type of equipment that would be requested in the 2014 application the department performed a review of the PPE or “turnout gear” being worn by firefighters and found that a number of members were wearing non-compliant, poor fitting, and obsolete equipment. Based on these findings the department submitted an application to fund the purchase of this equipment through the highly competitive federal AFG program. The application scored high enough in the review process to be funded in the first round of 2014 award announcements made this week.
“The Brewster Fire Department is extremely pleased to receive this funding to purchase individual personal protective equipment that will deliver maximum levels of protection to our firefighters operating in hazardous environments, said Brewster Fire Chief Robert Moran. I would like to thank all the members of the fire department staff who assisted with the grant process along with Senator Warren and Congressman Keating for their valued support of our department and the services we provide”.
