Brewster Firefighters Busy During February 16th Blizzard

On February 15th and 16th a blizzard with heavy, wet snow and high winds moved across Cape Cod. Based on the impending severe weather forecast facing the community Fire Chief Robert Moran who is also the Towns Emergency Management Director called in additional fire department staff to assist the on-duty firefighters with emergency responses during what was projected to be a severe weather event. During a 24 hour period beginning at approximately 6:00 pm on Feb 15th that stretched across both days the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched to over 55 storm related fire incidents and several EMS runs. These requests for fire department services caused by the high winds and heavy snow included fallen trees, downed primary electric wires, removal of downed trees from roadways, electric panel fires, smoke investigations, and transformer explosions. At one point 1,200 customers in the community including Town Hall and the Department of Public Works facility were without power. The members of the Brewster Fire Department working during this event should be commended for once again succeeding in meeting the challenges of providing safe and effective emergency services during yet another crippling winter storm.
