Nickerson State Park Burn Victim

Brewster Fire Department Press Release for Immediate Distribution:

On Thursday August 8 at 3:16 p.m. the Brewster (MA) Fire Department was dispatched to Area 6 in Nickerson State Park for a reported child with serious burns to his upper extremities.  On arrival Paramedics found a two-year old male patient with serious second and third degree burns to both hands and left arm.

The family from Concord New Hampshire had just arrived at the park and was in the process of establishing their camp site when the child tripped and fell into a fire pit containing hot embers from a previous fire.

Due to the serious nature of the injuries and the need to ensure that suitable treatment was made available without delay fire department personnel requested the response of a Medflight helicopter to transport the child to a medical facility capable of treating burn injuries of this type.

Based on the reported Medflight response time the fire department transported the child to Barnstable Municipal Airport via ground where the patient was transferred to the helicopter and moved to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.
