The Brewster Fire & Rescue Department makes every attempt to conduct a probationary call firefighter/emt class each September. However, the scheduling of this class is directly dependent on the number of open call roster positions and the number of individuals in place on our waiting list at that time.
If conducted the class is held one night a week and select Saturdays from mid September to December. During this time our training committee will instruct the new members in various Brewster Fire & Rescue operating guidelines, policies, equipment, rules, and regulations in addition to a number of basic fire service and ems related knowledge, skills, and abilities. The in-house training provided is designed to prepare the candidate with the basic skills and information required to attend and complete the mandated Firefighter I/II and Emergency Medical Technician certification courses upon completion of the in-house probationary member training sessions.
At this time all new members of the Brewster Fire & Rescue Department are required to become certified to the Firefighter I/II and Emergency Medical Technician levels. The training time involved to complete the Brewster probationary class and meet these certifications levels is approximately 15 months. Due to this fact it is highly recommended that potential candidates acquire one or both of these certifications prior to seeking employment.
Individuals interested in joining our expert, professional group of employees may visit fire headquarters Monday through Friday between the hours of 900 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to pick up an application. Once the completed application is returned you will be placed in the candidate pool and contacted prior to the commencement of the next probationary member course. Applications must be submitted no later than August 1 of each year.
