On December 24, 2011 at 8:34 pm the Brewster and Orleans Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence on Serenity Lane in the Town of Brewster for a reported cardiac arrest with bystander CPR in progress.  This dual dispatch of fire department resources to high priority incidents is standard protocol for this area of Brewster due to extended travel times and the Brewster Fire Departments commitment to our residents to provide rapid and effective emergency medical care.

Upon arrival of the Orleans Fire Department FF/P Geoff Deering, FF/P Joseph Lang, and FF/P Douglas Edmunds the patient was found to be in cardiac arrest.  Immediate emergency medical care including CPR and defibrillation was initiated   by these personnel. Shortly after Brewster FD members FF/P Glen Cefalo, P Michelle Kilburn, and FF/EMT Gary Stobbart arrived on scene, took over CPR from the Orleans crew and began to prepare for transport.

With the patient still in cardiac arrest a second defibrillation shock was administered. This treatment along with the administration of cardiac medications proved successful and the patient became conscious and alert.  The patient was then moved to the Brewster ambulance and transported to Cape Cod Hospital.

Due to the rapid, professional, and coordinated life saving actions provided by this team of mutual aid partners and emergency medical experts the patient survived this critical emergency.  For their actions during this incident they are presented with a life saving unit citation.

Childbirth

Captain/P Donald LaBonte, FF/P Chad Foakes, FF/EMT Matthew Tucker

In the pre-dawn hours of June 29, 2011 the fire department was dispatched to a residence on Anne Way for a medical problem.  Responding from his home Captain/P Donald LaBonte was first on scene and found a female patient in active labor.  On arrival of the ambulance with FF/P Chad Foakes and FF/EMT Matthew Tucker the patient was immediately prepared for transport to Cape Cod Hosptial. During transport a more thorough patient assessment was conducted.  As a result of this exam personnel found the patients contractions to be very close together indicating birth was imminent.  Based on this information the crew pulled the ambulance to the side of Route 6 and made all necessary preparations for delivery. At 6:52 am a beautiful baby girl was delivered by the crew.  The newborn was wrapped in a warming blanket and placed with the mother.  Both were then transported to Cape Cod Hospital for further evaluation.

Delivering a baby is a rare, yet extremely satisfying event for emergency medical personnel.  I am sure these individuals feel extremely happy that they had a part in bringing a new life into this world.  For their professional, expert, and compassionate actions displayed during this medical event these members are presented with a childbirth recognition citation.
